General Summary:  Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, the Teacher Assistant will plan and implement individual and group activities designed to stimulate learning for all children.


This position works during the school year only typically from August through May or June.


To be successful, you will need:

Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or 24 semester units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.


6 months experience working with families and children in a preschool setting required. 


1 year of experience working with developmentally disabled/delayed or behaviorally challenged children including supporting Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and/or Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) using social-emotional curriculum and inclusion methods is preferred.


Hold a current California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Child Development Associate Teacher permit or higher.


Ability to converse, write, and/or translate in Spanish or Armenian preferred.


Criminal Records (e.g. Live Scan Fingerprinting), Child Abuse Index Check, Sexual Offender Registry, Health, Tuberculosis (TB) test and Immunization clearances required.


Hold a valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate upon hire or within 30 days of hire.


Show ability to have flexibility, maturity of judgment, and ability to work collegially.


Uphold the values and principles of the organization.


Valid California Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, automobile insurance, and clean DMV record preferred.


Ability to supervise pre-school children and ensure a safe environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events going on at all times in the classroom, outdoor play areas and on field trips.


Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency or a crisis situation.


Ability to maintain cooperative, diplomatic working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, families, and the community to work as part of a team, and collaborate with colleagues.


Ability to maintain all assigned workflow and a high level of customer satisfaction in a fast paced working environment.

Within the team structure, provide quality preschool services for children enrolled in the Head Start program which include the following responsibilities:


Interactions with Children and Families

  • Develop and utilize the Creative Curriculum to provide age      appropriate activities indoor and outdoor for children’s growth in all      developmental domains. Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem      solving, cooperation, socialization, choices and ask open-ended questions.      Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all children including at risk,      special needs, gifted and culturally diverse populations. Establish weekly      goals that promote individual and group educational plans that support      school readiness and facilitates transition into Kindergarten. Prepare      classroom materials to support developmentally appropriate curriculum      plans and create and change learning centers as needed.   Ensure and maintain a clean and safe      indoor and outdoor environment on a daily basis. Assist with food service      and other classroom needs as requested. Communicate regularly with parents,      regarding each child’s progress. Conduct the required parent conferences      and home visits to establish individual goals, classroom progress, and      provide educational strategies at school and home.


Staff Relationships

  • Ensure      the daily routine and functions of the classroom are working and being      implemented; rotate classroom responsibilities and support other staff to      complete all classroom duties on a daily basis. Actively involved in the      Individual Education Plan processes by participating in meetings, making      referrals, active in assessments, goals planning, and ensuring children      are receiving services. Maintain communication and professional boundaries      at all times with staff and parents.      


Administrative Functions

  • Maintain      a system of confidentiality for records and information of Head Start      families. Ensure monthly reports are accurate and submitted to Lead      Teacher and Center Director. Collect observations for ongoing assessments      to ensure child outcomes are meeting agency benchmarks. Read, analyze, and      interpret data from the DRDP(2015).       Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, effective      teaching strategies, regulations, licensing, DCFS, and diversity      application. Assist with generating in-kind.
