The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one Early Childhood Center Director vacancy within the Human Services Department. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starting individual who can work with a diverse population and maintain a high quality early childhood program.

Under direction in the Human Services Department, the Early Childhood Center Director is fully responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a child development center in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations for the Head Start/State Preschool/Early Head Start Program(s); performs developmental assessments; implements, supervises and monitors daily early education activities; performs as a working supervisor to Early Head Start Instructors, Head Start Instructors, Early Head Start/Head Start Assistant Instructors, and Family Advocates; and performs related duties as assigned.

**Required at the time of application: Copy of College Transcript(s) and copy of State of California Child Development Permit at Site Supervisor level or higher. Applications without the required documents will be considered incomplete. 

This is a public contact position.  Although no current vacancies require a specific language, the eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies that may require bilingual skills.

The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other vacancies that occur within the City including full-time and permanent part-time positions, if applicable.

Minimum Requirements for Application


Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable:

A Bachelor's or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or related field including twelve (12) post-secondary semester units or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development, plus three (3) units supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting completed at an accredited or approved college or university;
AND, a Children's Center Supervisory Permit (or higher level permit) issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing.

Two years of teaching in a licensed child care center or comparable group child care program.  Previous experience in a Head Start Program is highly desirable.
