Under the direction of the Program Manager and/or assigned supervisor, responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the health service activities for the Early Head Start/Head Start/State Preschool Programs to comply with local, state, and federal policies.
The classification of Child Development Nurse is distinguished from the Health Services Technician classification in that the latter performs a variety of services related to the health of students district-wide while the Child Development Nurse plans, implements, and evaluates those services. 


Develops Policies and Procedures for the Head Start/Early Head Start Health component that promote compliant and quality services.
Assess and evaluate the health needs of the Early Head Start/Head Start/State Preschool children in accordance with health services performance standards of the Early Head Start/Head Start/State Preschool policies and procedures.
Completes health referral requests to assure students receive physical and dental examinations and required follow-up care.
Establish and maintain appropriate health records procedures in accordance with the Performance Standards, licensing, state and local regulations, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
Assist parents in obtaining needed medical and dental services, to ensure enrolled child has an ongoing source of continuous, accessible health care and provide follow up assistance as needed as required by Early Head Start/Head Start/State Preschool regulations.
Reviews student data to follow-up with parents whose children have identified health needs or are not current with the required health services and determine the need for counseling or medical intervention and home visits in accordance with rules and regulations.
Provide leadership in the implementation of the Child Development Performance Standards in health services, including the development of appropriate plans and health records tracking system.
Collaborate and establish partnerships with community health care providers for comprehensive health services according to program rules and regulations.
Conducts health education workshops and conferences for staff, parents and students regarding safety, health procedures, child abuse prevention, communicable diseases, first aid, medical instructions for medications, procedures and information on diseases/disorders as needed.
Address children's medical needs by developing individual health plans and providing training and guidance to staff regarding specific health needs of individual children.
Review and maintain classroom health monitoring tools, including reporting concerns to
Child Development Program supervisors.
Serve as a liaison and advocate between the school, home, and community for those children with identified health problems and concerns.
Participates in regional Health Services Advisory Committee.
Performs related duties as assigned.


Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
Three (3) years of experience administering or providing direct service, community health, occupational health, school nursing, pediatrics, or a related area in health services.
Language Requirements:
Some positions may require the ability to read, write and speak fluently in a designated second language.
Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse with the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Current first aid and CPR certificates issued by an authorized agency.
Prior to hire the following must be completed:

  • Clear criminal record with the Department of Justice following a fingerprint screening;  (DOJ/FBI/CACI).
  • Completed and signed statement of any pending and prior criminal arrests/charges/convictions related to child sexual abuse, child abuse and neglect, and/or violent felonies;
  • Successful completion of an initial health examination to determine fitness for duty.
  • Proof of the absence of Tuberculosis, from a physician, to document that the prospective employee is cleared to work with children and families; required immunizations: TDAP (whooping cough), MMR (measles), Flu (optional – perspective employee can opt out with a written statement).
  • AB1207 Mandated Reporter Training

Must possess a CA driver's license, access to an automobile, and evidence of automobile insurance.
