PROGRAM SUMMARY
Plaza de la Raza Child Development Services, Inc. (Plaza) is a comprehensive early childhood education program with a focus on school readiness for children zero to five years of age. Developmentally appropriate services are provided for children from low-income families, zero to five years of age. Plaza de la Raza currently serves over 700 children and their families.

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Educational Services and Center Operations, this position assists and/or develops and updates classroom programs and procedures for instructional outcomes, curriculum implementation, child assessment and cultural and linguistic responsiveness. This position provides staff with an assessment to identify strengths, areas of needed support and which staff would benefit from intensive coaching through opportunities to be observed and receive feedback and modeling of effective teaching practices related to program performance goals. If intensive coaching is needed this position provides coaching that aligns with the program’s school readiness goals, curricula, and other approaches to professional development providing ongoing communication between the coach, the Assistant Director of Educational Services and the Executive Director. Assessments will include clearly articulated goals informed by the program’s goals, and a process for achieving the identified goals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General direction and supervision is provided by the Assistant Director of Educational Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with agency staff, children, parents, and outside agencies.
• Implements the Mentor Coach Program plan and procedures.
• Interprets and applies program policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Administers the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and analyzes data to measure improvement of teaching strategies to ensure positive child outcomes.
• Coaches and guides staff through the implementation of a developmental and linguistic approach to child development and education.
• Develops and maintains schedules for on-site classroom observations.


• Provides one-to-one mentor coaching strategies for improving teacher-child interactions. Models effective teaching practices.
• Provides initial and ongoing training and technical assistance to identified teaching staff to reinforce program philosophy, policies and procedures and other topics as requested or assigned to ensure the uniform delivery of quality services.
• Reviews and analyzes reports and data to develop trainings and coaching strategies to improve the quality of educational services.
• Supports the professional growth and development of teachers and site supervisors.
• Assists in developing and evaluating program goals and objectives and provides input into the agency Workforce Development Plan.
• Meets regularly with immediate supervisor and attends and/or facilitates meeting and training sessions as needed.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of child and family information.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written format.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field from an accredited 4 year college or university. A current California Child Development Master Teacher Permit or higher. Six semester units of six infant and toddler development; 3 units of which may be completed in the first 12 months of employment.

Experience
Four years’ experience in a classroom or group setting with young children. Maintain Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) reliability in the relevant age range. Trained in Practice-Based Coaching and using assessment data to deliver coaching and professional development strategies aligned with performance goals. CLASS reliability certification and Practice-Based Coaching training may be completed in the first 12 months of employment.

 

 

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
• Successful completion of an initial health examination, performed by or under the supervision of a physician to determine, at a minimum, that the prospective employee can perform requirements of the job description’s physical requirements.
• Proof of the absence of Tuberculosis, from a physician that the prospective employee is cleared to work with children and families
• Documentation of current immunizations against Influenza, Mumps, Measles, & Rubella (MMR) and Pertussis (TDAP).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met, or are encountered, by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee may frequently lift and/or move a minimum of 25 pounds up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Fingerprint clearances from the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and the Child Abuse Index prior to starting employment.
• Completed and signed statement of any pending and or prior criminal arrests/charges/convictions related to child sexual abuse, child abuse and neglect, and/or violent felonies.
• Verification that determines eligibility for employment in the United States of America.
• A valid California driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to obtain transportation to perform position duties is required.
• As a mandated reporter of child abuse, must immediately report any suspected child abuse and/or neglect to Child Protective Services.
• Bi-lingual in a language reflective of the population served is preferred.

4. Use positive methods of child guidance and will not engage in corporal punishment, emotional or physical abuse, or humiliation.

5. Not employ methods of discipline that involve isolation, the used of food as punishment or reward, or the denial of basic needs.
6. Not solicit or accept personal gratuities, favors or anything of significant monetary value form contractors or potential contractors.
7. Maintain respect and promote professional relationships with the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), families, staff and children.
8. Refrain from the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of alcoholic beverage, controlled substance, and tobacco products in the workplace or at any activity funded by federal or state funds.
9. Maintain adherence to LACOE, state, or federal mandates, including but not limited to program eligibility determination regulations for Early Head Start, Head Start or state preschool services.
10. Enrolling pregnant women and children that are not eligible to receive Early Head Start or Head Start services.
